Photon Counting Lidar Maricopa and Pinal Counties Project
Integration of photon counting lidar data with existing geospatial systems to improve accessibility and usability for local government and commercial users
Maricopa and Pinal Counties, AZ
The Challenge
Maricopa and Pinal Counties faced requirements of acquiring high-resolution, high-density lidar data to support detailed geospatial analysis and mapping. Managing the logistics of capturing and processing lidar data over such a vast area added complexity to the project. Additionally, ensuring that the data integrated seamlessly with local geospatial systems and platforms was crucial for effective utilization.
The Outcome
VeriDaaS [Sanborn now owns VeriDaas lidar technology and assets] teamed with Sanborn in a highly impactful lidar acquisition for the project. Sanborn provided comprehensive, high-density lidar data that enhanced the spatial detail and accuracy of the information for Maricopa and Pinal Counties. Cutting-edge photon counting lidar technology enabled detailed point cloud datasets, facilitating advanced analysis and decision-making. The integration of this data with existing geospatial systems improved accessibility and usability for local government and commercial users.
The Details
The scope of the Maricopa and Pinal Counties project involved acquiring and processing high-resolution lidar data to support various applications, including urban planning, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure development. The Avalanche Lidar Sensor System Sanborn acquired from VeriDaaS that can capture 30 points per square meter (ppsm) to create detailed point clouds.
The data processing workflow produced high-resolution derivative products, such as digital elevation models and 3D maps. The data was then hosted on Esri’s ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, allowing for efficient access to data for internal and external stakeholders.

Key Results
The project delivered a high-density lidar data set through using a photon counting lidar system, significantly improving the spatial resolution and accuracy of geospatial information for Maricopa and Pinal Counties. This project demonstrates the powerful combination of VeriDaaS’s technology with Sanborn’s geospatial expertise, providing local governments and commercial users with valuable insights for improved planning, analysis, and decision-making.
- Efficient Data Acquisition: Demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating advanced technology with expert processing.
- Valuable Insights: Provided high-quality data that benefited local government and commercial users.
- Successful Technology Integration: Highlights the complementary merger of photon counting lidar technology into Sanborn’s technology stack.
