Getting Started With HERE Maps APIs for Business

Why use HERE maps for business?

HERE Technologies (creators of HERE maps APIs) is one of the world’s largest providers of location intelligence. HERE is the single largest provider of location data in Europe, and is rapidly growing in the U.S. as a flexible routing and logistics engine for all types of businesses.

    1. HERE has a diverse, deep suite of routing and logistics APIs
    2. HERE offers a true Freemium model to get you started
    3. HEREs terms of service allow for flexible use cases by industry standards

HERE’s API-driven approach makes it easy to deploy high performance and highly scalable maps and mapping functions into your applications.

How much do HERE Technologies APIs cost?

HERE API cost is driven by “transactions”, which are defined by either a single request made to HERE servers from an end users device or by certain actions and requests made within advanced Geocoding, Map Attributes, and Routing features

As of March 2022, HERE offers 13 different REST APIs with a diverse feature set with varied pricing within those APIs.

HERE offers up to a total of 250k API “transactions” for free (excludes Matrix Routing (multiple stop routing), and up to 1 Million transactions in their $449 / month “Pro” plan bucket. HERE Pro includes Data Hub and Matrix Routing (up to 100 destinations per route).

HERE maps pricing breakdown (cost per transaction):

    1. Map Tile API, Map Image API, Vector Tile API — first 30,000 transactions free, $0.075 per thousand transactions after that.
    2. Routing API (car, bicycle, pedestrian), Geocoding, Auto Complete — first 30,000 transactions free, $0.75 per thousand transactions after that.
    3. Search API, Autosuggest, Traffic API, Positioning API, Advanced Routing (Taxi, Truck, Time Aware Routing, Public Transit, Intermodal) first 5,000 transactions free, $2.50 per thousand transactions after that.
    4. Matrix Routing, Isoline Routing (range / radius), EV Routing, Waypoint Sequencing, Weather, Route Matching, Maps Attributes (slope, speed limit, traffic lights, etc.), Advanced Traffic first 2,500 transactions free, $5.00 per thousand transactions after that.

Each of these groups has volume discounts available (20% off after a certain number of transactions depending on API). For HERE Pro users (especially with millions of transactions), it is encouraged to work with a HERE partner for bulk pricing.

What Approach Does HERE Maps Take for Logistics and Routing?

HERE focuses on enabling vehicle logistics solutions with relevant road attributes and routing options such as live traffic, road closures due to weather and accidents. HERE is an excellent resource for truck specific data, truck restrictions and specific POIs for logistics.
HERE offers storage of geocoding results, offline map support for mobile clients out of cell tower range, and combining custom data with HERE data and applying HERE services.
